Last year there were some cuneiform inscriptions, mentioning the citiy of Nerik – a strong indication. Here you can see stairs leading down into a subterranean tunnel. This will become an exciting part of the excavation next year. But before that there need some preparations to be done, to avoid a breakdown of the tunnel. The purpose of the tunnel is still completely unknown. What you can also see are some women from the village who are working here. That had started 2009 as an experiment, because the traditional rules wouldn’t allow this. But it worked out very well. Surprisingly many women wanted to work here and the men didn’t create any problem.

In the 2nd millenium B.C. the Hittites ruled an empire that reached from western Turkey to the borders of Egypt.

In 1183, King Philippe II Auguste enlarged the marketplace in Paris and built a shelter for the merchants, who came from all over to sell their wares. In the 1850s, the massive glass and iron buildings that Les Halles became known for were constructed. Les Halles was known as the “stomach of Paris”. mile Zola’s 1873 novel Le Ventre de Paris (The Belly of Paris) revolves around Les Halles.

Unable to compete in the new market economy and in need of massive repairs, the colorful ambience once associated with the bustling area of merchant stalls disappeared in 1971, when Les Halles was dismantled, and replaced with an underground modern shopping precinct, the Forum des Halles.

It is notable in that the open air center area is below street level, like a pit, and contains sculpture, fountains, and mosaics, as well as museums including the Muse Grvin – Forum des Halles (a wax museum). Beneath this lies the underground station Chtelet-Les-Halles, central hub of Paris’s express urban rail system, the RER.

It has five districts: Houixay, Ton Pheung, Muang, Pha Oudom, with 36 townships, more than 450 villages and a total population of 61,000 consisting of many ethnic groups, each with own lifestyles and customs.

The most lucrative occupation in Bokeo is gold panning and digging for precious stones, where you can see at Ban Nam Khok (The Lu village), 6 km from the town and Ban Houi Sala (The Hmong village), it’s around 18 km far from the town of Houixay. At Ban Namkeung Kout, Ban Namkeung Mai and Ban Done Deng, it’s 26 km far from the center of Houixay town to the north where you can visit the traditional Lu village, who came originally from Muang Sing, Luang Namtha. The villages can be reached by boat trip, upstream from Houixay.
