Hotel Eurostars Madrid Tower

My trip to Britain this time started in London. We are here for just over a month and will work our way west to Bath, then up to the Lake District and on to the West coast of Scotland.
London was mostly sunny with scattered cloud the four days we were here. It tried to rain a couple of times but seemed to miss the city itself. As I have photographed many parts of London before I tried to do things a little differently this time.
I tried to photograph some famous icons with Sunstars and was lucky enough to catch quite a few. Its hard to stay in position for long with people bumping past you but fun trying anyway!
some of the images below with Sunstars include Big Ben at Westminster, Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, Wellington’s Arch and the Tower Bridge.

I have also worked some Panorama images of the city itself from the River Thames, From the top of St Paul’s Cathedral and from around the Tower of London.
We now head of towards the West through to Bath, so my next images on this blog will include images from this amazing historical town and surrounding area.

During the history of the Monastery, numerous reconstructions changed the defensive buildings. The earliest stone walls and towers were erected in 50s of the 16th century. After the military events of the beginning of the 17th century, new fortress walls were raised. Fragments of these fortifications remain until now: the Water Gates, the Tower of the Virgin (1623) and the Uglich Tower, and also curtain wall between them.

Through arrowslit the Church of the Epiphany ( http://www.yarmp.yar.ru/index.php?title=Church_of_the_Epiphany&uselang=en ) is visible.

History

First mention of the St. Peter’s Church is in records dating to 1209. The church was a masonry construction and therefore undamaged by a city fire in Riga that year. The history of the church can be divided into three distinct periods: two associated with Gothic and Romanesque building styles, the third with the early Baroque period. The middle section of the church was built during the 13th century, which encompasses the first period. The only remnants of this period are located in the outer nave walls and on the inside of a few pillars in the nave, around which larger pillars were later built.

Second period of construction

The second period dates to 1408-09, when master builders Johannes Rumeschottel from Rostock supervised the construction of the sanctuary, based on the St. Mary’s Church in Rostock. The sanctuary was almost finished by 1409, but due to the PolishLithuanianTeutonic War it was completed and dedicated only in 1419. Other construction work was interrupted by the plague in 1420 and resumed in the 1430′s. The 13th century church was reconstructed in 1456-66 to conform to the newly built sanctuary. Both constructions were joined in the 1470′s, thereby creating a mighty basilica with three aisles and ornate vaulted ceilings. The old bell tower was replaced in 1456, and a bell was hung in the new tower in 1477. A 136 metres (446 ft) octagonal steeple was added to the tower in 1491, which, along with the church’s front facade, dominated the silhouette of Riga. The tower collapsed 11 March 1666, destroying a neighboring building and burying eight people in the rubble. The cornerstone for a new tower was laid 29 June 1667.

Third period of construction

Three identical portals by Bindenshu and Andreas Peterman were added in 1692.
The third period of construction dates to 1671-90, with the construction of the western facade and the new tower. The roof, vaulted ceilings and furnishings were also renovated during this time. Jacob Josten, the Dutch-born master builder of Riga, designed the tower and supervised its construction, which was begun April 1671 by the master mason Heinrich Henicke. Josten was replaced in 1675 by Rupert Bindenshu (1645-1698), the next master builder of Riga. The tower was completed in 1677, but it, along with the church interior, were destroyed already 21 May 1677, during a citywide fire. Bindenshu supervised the subsequent repairs in 1677-79: vaulted wooden ceilings replaced the former masonry vaulted ceilings, and the roof, windows, interior and furnishings were replaced or renovated. First service in the renovated church took place 14 September 1679. Renovation of the tower began 1686 and was designed by the city engineer Friedrich S. von Dahlen. The city council did not approve of the half-finished steeple, and so it was torn down in 1688. A new 64.5 metres (212 ft) copper-roofed steeple, designed by Bindenshu, was then built. A sphere and rooster were set atop the steeple 10 May 1690. This tower was the tallest wooden construction in Europe at the time. The western facade of the church was also altered in the later 17th century. The brick construction was covered with reddish limestone from Salaspils and Koknese, and the facade was decorated with volutes, pilasters, cornices, vases and borders made of Gotland stone. In 1692 the Riga City Council approved a design by Bindenshu and the mason Andreas Peterman for three identical portals. The merchant Klaus Mistett financed the portals, which were built by H. Henneken, Johann Daniel Schauss, Johann Gerwin and several other sculptors. The portals were decorated with Baroque style limestone sculptures. In 1694 L. Martini installed a new tower clock with a glockenspiel from Amsterdam.

Stockholm City Hall (Swedish: Stockholms stadshus or Stadshuset locally) is the building of the Municipal Council for the City of Stockholm in Sweden. It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island, next to Riddarfjrden’s northern shore and facing the islands of Riddarholmen and Sdermalm. It houses offices and conference rooms as well as ceremonial halls, and the luxury restaurant Stadshuskllaren. It is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet and one of Stockholm’s major tourist attractions.

Stockholm City Hall – golden room

The Golden Hall (Gyllene Salen), named after the decorative mosaics made of more than 18 million tiles. The mosaics make use of motifs from Swedish history. They were executed by the Berlin, Germany, firm of Puhl & Wagner Gottfried Heinersdorff, after nine years of negotiations by Gottfried Heinersdorff (1883-1941) for the commission.

Stockholm City Hall – Blue Hall

The Blue Hall, with its straight walls and arcades, incorporates elements of a representative courtyard. Its walls are in fact without blue decorations, but it has kept its name after stbergs original design. It is known as the dining hall used for the banquet held after the annual Nobel Prize award ceremony. The organ in the Blue Hall is with its 10,270 pipes the largest in Scandinavia.
