Saturday 06:30 AM, my iPhone emits the persistent “Marimba” sound. I wonder for a few seconds why I have to experience this torture, only to realize soon after that in less then an hour my train to Milan will be leaving. At the railway station I have just the time to get the latest issue of Monocle featuring the annual Quality of Life survey, before getting on the train. Destination is Milan, shooting at John Varvatos Spring / Summer 2012 Fashion Show at the deconsecrated church of San Paolo Converso . When I arrive on location I meet Mehmet, the Digital Marketing Manager of John Varvatos and soon after our photographer Maurizio Chiocchetti join us. It will take several hours until we can start shooting the empty venue.

Late afternoon at the Galata Bridge. Here is one of the central points of public traffic. Beside several small harbours for the ferries to the European and Asian parts of Istanbul, there is also the tramway and a busstation with connections to all parts of the city. The sky is very cloudy, quite unusual for August, and the summer 2009 brought a never known amount of rain and big floods to Istanbul.

Spter Nachmittag an der Galata Brcke. Hier ist einer der Verkehrsknotenpunkte des ffentlichen Nahverkehrs. Neben mehreren Schiffsanlegestellen fr die vielen kleinen Hfen am Bosporus auf europischer und asiatischer Seite und der modernen Trambahn, liegt hier auch ein Busbahnhof von dem aus alle Teile Istanbuls erreicht werden knnen.
Fr den August ist ein derart wolkenverhangener Himmel sehr ungewhnlich und der Sommer 2009 brachte Istanbul nie gekannt Regenmengen und enorme berschwemmungen.

The Oktorp Farmstead (Oktorpsgrden) comes from Halland. It shows what a farmstead in the flat countryside there looked like in the 1870s.

In front of the high seat there is a table and in front of the table a movable bench. But it was only on festive occasions that people ate at this table. On ordinary days the food was set out on a so-called chair-table close to the stove.
There are two built-in beds with curtains in the room, separated by a cupboard. It was here that farmer and his wife and the younger children slept. In winter the farm hands slept on benches in the kitchen quarters while in the summer they had their own sleeping quarters. Beneath the bed cupboard there was a space enclosed by a grill in which the ducks and hens were kept in the winter.

As the room appears at Skansen it has been decorated for a festive occasion. The walls and the ceiling have been draped with painted hangings and woven linen cloths. Normally the room did not look like this at all. But in southern Sweden it was not usual to have a separate room for parties. Instead, the living room was appropriately decorated for special occasions. Long painted hangings were fixed to the walls above the benches. Tapestries were woven by the women of the farm. The painted hangings, with Biblical motifs, were bought at markets or from itinerant salesmen. Behind the living room there are two further rooms, one of them furnished for the elderly grandmother Ingeborg. A tiled stove was erected in the room in the 19th century.

Living history at Skansen – the Oktorp farmstead

The wonderful light lasted about eight minutes and the gloom came back…. but those eight minutes were unbelievable in their light and luminosity!
The next morning we caught the first of the morning light in and around Loch-Ard gorge and the view further to the West. Again the light was magical and the clouds continued to disperse so we continued our way along the Great Ocean road with stops at Apollo Bay Lorne and Aireys Inlet. the Spit Point Lighthouse looked great in the full light of the Summer Blue skies…..This journey is so good a landscape photographer should almost put it on his or her yearly to do list!

Beijing ( Bijng) is the capital of the most populous country in the world, the People’s Republic of China, and also its second largest city after Shanghai. It was also the seat of the Ming and Qing dynasty emperors until the formation of a republic in 1911. Beijing is the political, educational and cultural centre of the country and as such it is rich in historical sites and important government and cultural institutions.

The city is well known for its flatness and regular construction. There are only three hills to be found in the city limits (in Jingshan Park to the north of the famous Forbidden City). Like the configuration of the Forbidden City, Beijing has concentric “ring roads”, which are actually rectangular, that go around the metropolis.

Beijing is characterized by its vastness and large distances between locations. Until recently, the city was almost entirely made up of hutongs with narrow lanes and single story buildings. Now, many of the hutongs have given way to broad boulevards and modern buildings, contributing to an airy, sprawling feel, in sharp contrast to cities like Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Beijing is the political centre of the country with official buildings and embassy areas dominating the city. Beijing is also the historical and cultural centre of China with many historical buildings and sites – especially within Ring Road Two. The city has undergone rapid modernization in recent years, with improvements of institutions, business environment and work conditions.

Given their city’s historical, cultural and political heft, Beijingers are justifiably proud to be citizens of the capital. An attitude known as or “Great Beijing-ism” is often used to describe their attitude toward people from other regions of China. They are often much more interested in politics and willing to talk about current events than people elsewhere in China. Beijingers also seem to focus on not losing face and often use humor in order to do so. However, many Chinese from other provinces find Beijingers very friendly and straightforward comparing with people from Shanghai especially.

The original building burned down on 30-Apr-1945 but was rebuilt and the current building was completed in 1954.

Until today there are herds of cattle on the pastures around the Krunkelbachhuette with an Inn for hikers in summer and skiers in winter.

The Herbs and grass market is held at the very “heart” of Old Riga on the 22th of June, one day
before the summer solstice, or Jani (pronounced Yaany), as this traditional and hugely popular feast is called in
Latvian.

Here you can find flower and oak leave wreaths for your all-nighter celebration around the bonfire,
buy herbs and beautiful flower bouquets to decorate the house and generally enjoy that unique moment
when Latvian meadows and gardens make their way to the city.
