Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation and Museum

Architectural style: Spanish/Mission Revival

The Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation is in Burbank, California. The shrine is a 75-foot-tall (23 m) structure of marble, mosaic and sculpted figures, and is the burial site for 13 pioneers of aviation. It was built in 1924 as the entrance to Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery. It was dedicated in 1953 by aviation enthusiasts who wanted a final resting place for pilots, mechanics and other pioneers of flight.

Dedicated to the honored dead of American aviation on the 50th anniversary of powered flight, December 17, 1953, by Lieutenant General Ira C. Eaker USAF (retired). Beneath the memorial tablets in this sacred portal rest the cremated remains of famous flyers who contributed so much to the history and development of aviation. The bronze plaques upon the marble walls memorialize beloved Americans who devoted their lives to the advancement of the air age. Administered under The auspices of the Brookins-Lahm-Wright Aeronautical Foundation, this shrine stands as a lasting tribute. Trustees, Valhalla Memorial Park.

On May 27, 1996, it was rededicated by Dr. Tom Crouch, Chairman of the Aeronautics Department at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR TO THE AMERICAN SOUTH WEST… OCT – NOV 2011

Having just returned home from a twenty-one day Photographic Tour I have put a small selection of images for everyone to enjoy. We travelled out from Las Vegas and our photographic adventure started in Snow Canyon just inside the border of Utah. For the next nineteen days we completed the grand tour of Canyons, Arches and Desert the are so magnificent in this part of the American West. Places visited include Zion, Bryce, Canyon-lands, Arches, Mesa Verde and the Grand Canyon National Parks. We also visited Dead Horse Point, Horseshoe Bend, Monument Valley, the Four Corners, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Dam and Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. The Autumn colours, the Sunrise at Arches, the Sunset at Monument Valley…. and the wonderful snow at two locations added to the amazing scenery we saw and photographed every day. Twenty-five people including myself had the most marvelous time capturing the colours and splendour of this region and filling memory cards quickly each day! A big thanks to Peter Walton for his wonderful input and support on this Tour, and also a big thank you to all who came with us on this trip… you were all wonderful and I loved every minute!!

A night of gently falling snow made the rim of the Grand Canyon the next morning a truly unforgettable experience…. and so pictured below is the group all smiling and… rearing to go and capture the scene before them!

This vast complex is among the most sumptuous Baroque buildings in Portugal and one of the biggest buildings constructed in Europe in the 18th century. The palace was built symmetrically from a central axis, occupied by the basilica, and continues lengthwise through the main façade until two major towers. Although the four summits that make up Cradle Mountain are only around 1,500 metres (Little Horn 1,355m, Weindorfers Tower 1,459m, Smithies Peak 1,527m, and Cradle Mountain 1,545m) the snow patches in late spring indicate how chilly this stunning National Park can be.

This overview photographed in beginning of June 2011 near the N255 shows a field of sunflowers and vineyards located close to Serpa in the Alentejo, Portugal. It is an essentially rural area and extensive plains inserted in Alentejo Wine Route. The soils are fundamentally granitic with some patches of schist and continental climate.
In Alentejo, the remains of the Roman presence are quite frequent, especially their “Villa Romana”, a place where they were obtained several pieces, some deposited in the National Archaeological Museum.

Southern Tasmania, Bruny Island and the Hartz Mountains.

On a recent trip to the Southern Area of Tasmania including a few days on Bruny Island, the unpredictable weather helped in getting some amazing shots. The dawn light in Adventure Bay was wonderful, but the weather would close in by the afternoon and bring a wind from the south. The seas would then become choppy and so I decided to do the morning boat trip along the coast to the southernmost area near the Bruny Lighthouse. This boat trip is highly recommended as the towering cliffs along this part of the Island are quite spectacular. Not for those prone to sea-sickness. It really pays to pick your time and if there is a strong wind it would be no use for photography, as you need to stand up in the boat when they stop for a moment, and its quite a challenge I can tell you! Also spent some time in the Hartz Mountains National Park, and as is so often the case when I go to this spot the wind and rain arrived within minutes of getting out of the car. Undaunted I managed to photograph Lake Dobson and get wet….yet again. The Arve river area was also damp, but no wind, so the rainforest looked amazing. The wonderful thing about Tasmania is the diversity in the weather, expect anything and you wont be disappointed.

An Overview of Karijini National Park

Bouncing around the top of the gorges one evening watching the light changing and clouds moving in and out of frames I had to settle on location before it all went south. While there was somewhat better clouds behind me I thought the landscape scene lacked a natural glow from the light and thus looked a little flat with so I shot this view from a ridge point vantage point as my primary focus as an overview of the land inside Karijini National Park. Uluru is world renowned for its majestic sunsets. While the rock changes colour as long as sunlight can reach it, any clouds in the sky continue the colourful light show when the sun disappears behind the horizon.

On my last evening inside Karijini National Park, I was witness to an amazing sunset over one of the most breathtaking locations within Australia. Karijini National Park after the wet season with its new green growth against the red earth of the far north is stunning. In the right light you really have a very very rough time making an critical decision on where to point your camera … On this particular evening I spent around 2 hours hiking along the rim of both Weano and Hancock Gorge taking a lot of images, watching the light change as sunset approached and making sure i was in a good position when and if the light was going to peak.

Well I just back last evening from an amazing five days inside Karijini National Park … This time I flew up to Port Hedland instead of the 16hr drive each way to save some time … But maybe next time I would not fly into Port Hedland, it is still quite a drive to Karijini National Park from there … While I was there I think we experienced all four seasons. With heavy rain overnight to misty showers for a full morning providing a great opportunity to photograph in overcast conditions, perfect blue skies with amazing clouds on another day to cool morning and some very warm afternoons with thunderstorms brewing and the odd lightning show thrown in each evening, we had it all. Hamersely Gorge was one of the gorges I never had the chance to visit in 2010 so this time round it was a must visit spot, regardless of distance, I wanted to see it … And I am so glad I did.
