Today’s building of the church of Jesus was built in 1822 according to the project of architect H. F. Breitkreic. Nowadays this is the biggest wooden building in Latvia and one of the biggest wooden churches in Europe. The tow-staged tower of the church is 37 m high.

During its existence the church of Jesus as long as the biggest part of Riga churches, was many times demolished and then restored. The first stone in its foundation was put in 1635; the church was consecrated in 1638.

The VEF I-12 was a Latvian trainer aircraft designed by Krlis Irbtis and produced by VEF in Riga during 1935 to 1941.

The plane was constructed mostly of wood. 12 copies were made. In 1937 it made several demonstrations in Paris. In London it was placed 5th and won the silver cup in the Thanet Air Race. The international tour was ended with a nine hour non-stop flight from London to Riga.

From November 17th – 20th in the central part of Riga the festival of light “STARO RIGA” (“Shine, Riga!”) were held.The concept of light has been chosen to symbolically celebrate the triumph of light over darkness in the darkest time of the year.

It’s designed and built in Latvia by a long-time race driver and engineer Andris Dambis with support from technical partners from China, USA, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. An evolution of the famously durable OSCar O3.

OSCar eO is a range extended electric vehicle with a total range of 800 km in racing conditions. 16 modules of powerful and durable battery packs from Winston Battery with combined voltage of 512 V and total energy of 52 kWh.

One powerful permanent magnet electric motor (with support for regenerative braking) with 150 kW nominal and 335 kW peak power. Nominal torque 400 Nm, peak torque 800 Nm. Permanent magnet generator 60 kW (nominal) driven by Nissan V6 internal combustion engine, with 240 liter safety fuel cell.

Both Great Guild and Small Guild dates from the 14th century when Riga was a member of Hanseatic League (cities which dominated the trade around the Baltic Sea and North Sea). The Great Guild was for the merchants and the Small Guild was for the craftsmen.

The appearance of the buildings you see today is of later date. The Great Guild was built between 1854 – 57 and today it houses the Latvian State Philharmonic Orchestra. The Small Guild was constructed between 1864 – 1866. Today the building is home of a cultural house, Guild. There are concerts, dances and conferences held here.

The sand-bag house includes various eco building ideas. Its central part is built from recycled used bags filled with sand and clay mixture. The outer walls of the bags are edged with turf, but internal walls are plastered with clay. Wood logs and bottles of wine are used in the construction of the lobby. The wine bottles were used to make stained glass, thus giving extra light in the day time.

At night the stained glass serves as a kind of luminous body of the Vienkoi park landscape. The inner room is arranged with dugout furniture and chandelier of wine bottles. The main emphasis of building the eco house is usage of local natural materials and recycled materials. Material costs for such house is relatively low, but the construction work is heavy.

The house is an experiment to see how this idea is able to live in climatic conditions of Latvia. The new sand-bag house not only improves the exposure of the Vienkoi Park, but also makes visitors think about natural and alternative ideas.

The sculpture garden Dainu Kalns (Folk-song Hill) is dedicated to Latvian folklore. It was established in 1985 in honor of Krisjanis Barons (1835 1923) who collected and systematizes folk-songs. Some years later political changes in Soviet Union and Latvia began. Dainu Hill became the symbol of national independence. Several years each Saturday and Sunday thousands of folklore groups arrived in Turaida to sing folksongs and to express their attitude towards these events, to honor past of Latvian people, to draw strength and belief for future. Emotional charge was so big that it surrounds Dainu Hill in nowadays too.

The GAZ M21 Volga, the first car to carry the Volga name, was developed in the early 1950s. Volgas were built to last in the harsh climate and rough roads of the Soviet Union, with high ground clearance (what gives it a specific “high” look, contrary to “low-long-sleek” look of Western cars of resembling design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s.

The Volga was stylistically in line with the major United States manufacturers of the period, and incorporated such then-luxury features as the reclining front seat, cigarette lighter, heater, windshield washer and 3-wave radio. When in 1959 the 6-cylinder line of GAZ cars was discontinued, Volga M-21 became the biggest and most luxurious car officially sold to individual owners in the USSR in large quantities, though its price was very high and made it unavailable for most car buyers.

Famous historic dance studio Petit Trianon from St.-Petersburg has presented a one-of-a-kind performance at the Riga Art Nouveau Museum.

Inspired by atmosphere of the early 20th century, the performance was designed to be first staged in Riga Museum, in authentic interiors of an apartment that was carefully restored to a marvelous and refined style of Art Nouveau epoch.

Actors, seen on the panorama, have posed during their daytime rehearsal. The original performance, however, staged in the evening, with special decorations, lights and music looked very much different. Poignant singing and passionate tango, historic dances of the times of Mata Hari and living pictures all have taken the public to an atmosphere of private evenings which could have been once enjoyed by our grand grandparents.
