Guest Photographer feature: “Discover Moscow through Andrey Ilyin’s Eyes.”
Andrey was born in Kazakhstan and came to Moscow in 1986 where he graduated from the Moscow Institute for Physics and Technology before becoming a freelance photographer. He has worked on assignments for the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune as well as a variety of other institutions. Thanks to his experience in digital photography and processing of images Andrey quickly learned to make high quality panoramas. He has made a big series of panoramas (more than 80) for a multimedia disc about the Kremlin. From the very beginning though his work had an “ethnographic” bent, focusing on daily life rather than tourist sites. He worked with a variety of museums, such as the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture, State History Museum, and photographed for the automobile industry, shooting panoramas for the auto.mail.ru site. He also creates images for the medical and hospitality industries. A number of his panoramas have been published on the Russia Today site, rt.com.

Moscow has always been a popular destination for tourists. Some of the better known attractions include the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Moscow Kremlin and Red Square, which was built between the 14th and 17th centuries.
It is the site of the Moscow Kremlin, one of the World Heritage Sites in the city, which serves as the residence of the President of Russia.
The Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) and the Government of Russia also sit in Moscow.
Moscow is a major economic centre. It is home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities. It possesses a complex transport system that includes four international airports, nine railroad terminals, and the world’s second busiest (after Tokyo) metro system which is famous for its architecture and artwork. Its metro is the busiest single-operator subway in the world.
Architect Vladimir Shukhov was responsible for building several Moscow landmarks during early Soviet Russia. The Shukhov Tower, just one of many hyperboloid towers designed by Shukhov, was built between 1919 and 1922 as a transmission tower for a Russian broadcasting company. Shukhov also left a lasting legacy to the Constructivist architecture of early Soviet Russia.
He designed spacious elongated shop galleries, most notably the GUM department store on Red Square, bridged with innovative metal-and-glass vaults.
