<p>Le phare doit son nom, au fait qu&#8217;un nombre relativement lev de baleines sont venues s&#8217;chouer  cet endroit de l&#8217;le de R par le pass.</p>
<p>Le phare a t construit,  partir de 1849 sur des plans de l&#8217;architecte Lonce Reynaud, pour remplacer l&#8217;ancien phare de 29 mtres construit en 1682 sur les directives de Vauban et qui subsiste encore aujourd&#8217;hui au nord du phare. La mise en service eut lieu en 1854. Le phare est haut de 57 mtres et l&#8217;accs au sommet se fait par un escalier hlicodal de 257 marches.<br />Il est doubl au large (nord-ouest) sur un banc rocheux, le  Haut Banc du Nord , par un petit phare, le phare des Baleineaux.</p>
<p>En 2001, l&#8217;tat, aprs un appel d&#8217;offre, le fait grer par une socit prive  Patrimoine Ocan  avec pour mission de d&#8217;en grer l&#8217;exploitation touristique, visites, boutique, mettre en place un muse, remettre en tat la vieille tour des Baleines et entretenir le site avec son parc.</p>
<p>Le phare de 1854 est toujours en activit et son feu a une porte de 50 kilomtres environ. Il est visit par 160 000 visiteurs chaque anne.</p>
<p>En 2010, entre janvier et mars, la lanterne du grand phare a t compltement restaure et repeinte  neuf. Le 14 dcembre, la Commission Rgionale des Monuments Historiques a dcid de classer Monuments Historiques le grand phare et ses locaux annexes ainsi que le phare des Baleineaux.</p>
<p>Depuis 2007 un muse ddi aux phares et balises a t cr dans l&#8217;ancien btiment de l&#8217;cole des gardiens de phare aux pieds de la vieille tour</p>
