They are a unique example of the alpine landscape in the area and have been a nature reserve since 1933.

The walls of both cirques are about 100 metres (330 ft) high and contain small tarn lakes. They were formed during the last phase of the glacial period and consist predominantly of granite. However, in two exposed places basalt was found (apparently of volcanic origin), which is quite rare in this part of Central Europe. Some rare species of arctic and alpine plants appear in the cold and dark parts of the cirques: Pulsatilla alpina, Gentiana asclepiadea, Aconitum napellus, and the only place in Europe, where Saxifraga nivalis appears. At the top of the larger cirque, at the abski Szczyt, there is a radio and television tower.

It is possible to climb the cirque walls, though climbing is permitted only in January and February and dangerous; since World War II there has been ten fatal accidents. Hiking is possible; the Main Sudety Trail as well as the Polish – Czech Friendship Trail run along the upper ridge of the cirques, close to the abyss. Two mountain huts, Pod mielcem and Pod abskim Szczytem, are located in the area.

It is one of the largest mountain fortifications in Europe and sits atop the table mountain of the same name.
The 9.5 hectare rock plateau rises 240 metres above the Elbe and has over 50 buildings, some over 400 years old, that bear witness to the military and civilian life in the fortress. The rampart run of the fortress is 1,800 metres long with walls up to 42 metres high and steep sandstone faces. In the centre of the site is a 152.5 metre deep well, which is the deepest in Saxony and second deepest well in Europe.
The fortress, which for centuries was used as a state prison, is still intact and is now one of Saxony’s foremost tourist attractions, with 700,000 visitors per year.

It is an example of the rationalistic trend in Art Nouveau architecture with an image of Mother and Child on the facade, majolica made by artist Kuzma Sergeevich Petrov-Vodkin.

Jeremy Howard wrote in his book “Art nouveau: international and national styles in Europe” (published by Manchester University Press in 1996) : “The diversity of Meltser’s approach, as well as his mastery, were simultaneously expressed in the Orthopaedic Institute building (1902-5) which was an early example of the rationalist trend. However, the chapel in pressed brick and with staggered flat roofs, incorporated a Vrubelesque majolica panel of the Virgin and Child. This was the design and first major work of Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, a young discovery of Meltser’s who was be engaged on the decoration of many of his projects. The tiles were executed and installed by specialists from the London branch of the Doulton ( http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Doulton ) pottery company. Pools around the World

Let’s start with what most likely is the most beautiful private suite pool around. For you to enjoy the Hotel Principe di Savoia Presidential Suite’s pool in Milan. Located on the top floor of the building, reachable with its private elevator, the Presidential Suite is the largest and most exclusive suite in Europe measuring 500sq meters (almost 5400sq feet). It features Empire style, original antique furniture and an elegant working fireplace in the living room.
The elegant dining room is furnished with French crystal, Limoges porcelain and silverware. Authentic Venetian XIX century mirrors, Murano glass lamp and chandeliers, marble and bronze wall lamps, original late XIX century prints and fine objects in marble and granite complete the luxurious location.

Milan: Hotel Principe di Savoia Presidential Suite's pool

Then let’s glimpse the Copacabana Palace pool in Rio de Janeiro. One of Rios storied hotels, the Copacabana Palace boasts a nearly unrivaled pool. Open 24 hours a day, their swimming pool is an escape from the bustling streets that border it. Old world charm and a full staff dedicated to serving guests all day, its enough to make one not take advantage of the hotels private beach service. With their Pergula restaurant situated poolside, the pool is flourishing with activity both day and night.
What to order poolside? The Pergula restaurant serves a mean feijoda a stew of mixed dried meats a Brazilian specialty. Take advantage of their classic Afternoon Tea, as well.

Actually this is not a pool, but the fountain of Hotel Las Arenas in Valencia. I thought to add it here since it looks really nice. The Hotel Balneario Las Arenas is the only Great Luxury Five star Hotel in the Santos chain, it belongs to the select LHW Club, and was born from the desire to claim back recuperate the beaches of Las Arenas and La Malvarrosa in the city of Valencia, combining the architectural beauty of the historical thermal spa of Las Arenas, founded in 1898, with the elegance and comfort of modern design, set in a privileged position by the sea. Using the architectural structures of the existing pavilions in the old Spa as a guide, this building with its classical lines has become a point of reference for everyone visiting Valencia.

Between sea and mountain, Corsica has many surprises in store…

Guest Photographer feature: Discover Corsica through Mark Anderson’s Eyes.

Mark was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1968. After travelling and working with handicapped children in Israel, he arrived in Corsica with a one-way ticket when he was 20 years old. He immediately fell in love with the island and has lived there ever since. For him, it was simply a move from one island to another, this one with more sun but less Pubs. His first experience with photography was as a child endeavouring to make an old Brownie camera work with kitchen tin-foil as film. Years later, dreaming of wildlife photography, his first wages went towards a Nikon FG.

Interested in panoramic photography since the late 90s, it was not until a change in career became possible in 2006 that Mark decided to create his own business. At that time, flash panoramas became possible and with it, the vast majority of internet users could take a virtual tour without installing dedicated plugins. He approached his first client, a Corsican luxury hotel. They accepted and the business began. Learning the technique was not easy at first and often frustrating. Mark says acquiring a satisfactory quality and efficient workflow were difficult, but thanks to panographic forum members such as Hans Nyberg, John Houghton, to mention only a few, whom helped by sharing their knowledge.

The vast majority of Marks customers are in the tourist industry, hotels, residences and villas. When he can, he goes and shoots 360s of the villages in Corsica, a lucky number you may say as there are precisely 360 villages in the island of Corsica. Go Mark, theres still some more of those 360 villages to shoot.

Rock formation Sunset over Calvi

The tourist wealth of this veritable miniature continent lies undeniably in its natural heritage. In this sense, Corsica differs from the idea one has of the Mediterranean islands. In fact, no other island is as green as Corsica: from its Laricio pine forests and emerald-green mountain lakes, to its fragrant maquis, cooling high mountain pastures and wine-growing lands.

Corsican goat

If Corsica is an emerald isle, it owes it to its unique topography in the Mediterranean: this mountain in the sea is well deserving of its nickname, with 120 peaks above an altitude of 2 000 m, which remain snow-capped until the spring. The 25 watercourses that flow through it make the island the best irrigated in the Mediterranean Basin.

Palombaggia beach

To top it all, Corsica offers the luxury of 1 000 km of the richest, most varied coastline. With a “Parc Naturel Rgional” [Regional Natural Park] that covers two-thirds of its surface area, Corsica is a well-preserved island divided between nature reserves and listed sites.

Port of Centuri

The island offers visitors all the very best of nature: rich fauna, the heady scents of its diverse flora, including numbers of endemic species, as well as the captivating colours of its sites. To maintain this balance, the “Parc Naturel Rgional de Corse” [Corsican Regional Natural Park], which stretches over 3 500 km of both land and sea, is a permanent site for preservation activities carried out by its officers. Five Rserves Naturelles [Nature Reserves] and one Parc Marin International [International Marine Park] have been created for the protection of unique and fragile flora and fauna.

Another mission entrusted to the officers of the Corsican Regional Natural Park is to maintain the footpaths, which offer visitors an incomparable view of Corsican nature. Paths such as Da Mare a Mare (from sea to sea, i.e. from west to east), Tra Mare e Monti (across sea and mountain: from north to south) and the famous GR20 (one of the most difficult and spectacular walks in Europe) are unforgettable ways to discover Corsican nature.

In Crysis 2, New York City has been ravaged by a series of climatic disasters and a plague that has struck down on the citys population with brutal epidemic speed. The aliens have returned, stalking the streets and leaving the city in chaos, its skyline in flames. Set in a world of futuristic warfare where soldiers are not solely reliant on firing rifles and hurling grenades, players are empowered to use New York City as a virtual playground and become the ultimate weapon.

Crysis 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Crytek, published by Electronic Arts and was released in North America, Australia, and Europe in March 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Officially announced on June 1, 2009, the game is the second main installment of the Crysis series, and is the sequel to the 2007 video game Crysis and Crysis Warhead. The story was written by author Richard Morgan, another science fiction author, Peter Watts, was also consulted and wrote a novel adaptation of the game. It is the first game to showcase the CryEngine 3 game engine.

+ view panorama

Author: Gints Grvelsons

History

First mention of the St. Peter’s Church is in records dating to 1209. The church was a masonry construction and therefore undamaged by a city fire in Riga that year. The history of the church can be divided into three distinct periods: two associated with Gothic and Romanesque building styles, the third with the early Baroque period. The middle section of the church was built during the 13th century, which encompasses the first period. The only remnants of this period are located in the outer nave walls and on the inside of a few pillars in the nave, around which larger pillars were later built.

Second period of construction

The second period dates to 1408-09, when master builders Johannes Rumeschottel from Rostock supervised the construction of the sanctuary, based on the St. Mary’s Church in Rostock. The sanctuary was almost finished by 1409, but due to the PolishLithuanianTeutonic War it was completed and dedicated only in 1419. Other construction work was interrupted by the plague in 1420 and resumed in the 1430′s. The 13th century church was reconstructed in 1456-66 to conform to the newly built sanctuary. Both constructions were joined in the 1470′s, thereby creating a mighty basilica with three aisles and ornate vaulted ceilings. The old bell tower was replaced in 1456, and a bell was hung in the new tower in 1477. A 136 metres (446 ft) octagonal steeple was added to the tower in 1491, which, along with the church’s front facade, dominated the silhouette of Riga. The tower collapsed 11 March 1666, destroying a neighboring building and burying eight people in the rubble. The cornerstone for a new tower was laid 29 June 1667.

Third period of construction

Three identical portals by Bindenshu and Andreas Peterman were added in 1692.
The third period of construction dates to 1671-90, with the construction of the western facade and the new tower. The roof, vaulted ceilings and furnishings were also renovated during this time. Jacob Josten, the Dutch-born master builder of Riga, designed the tower and supervised its construction, which was begun April 1671 by the master mason Heinrich Henicke. Josten was replaced in 1675 by Rupert Bindenshu (1645-1698), the next master builder of Riga. The tower was completed in 1677, but it, along with the church interior, were destroyed already 21 May 1677, during a citywide fire. Bindenshu supervised the subsequent repairs in 1677-79: vaulted wooden ceilings replaced the former masonry vaulted ceilings, and the roof, windows, interior and furnishings were replaced or renovated. First service in the renovated church took place 14 September 1679. Renovation of the tower began 1686 and was designed by the city engineer Friedrich S. von Dahlen. The city council did not approve of the half-finished steeple, and so it was torn down in 1688. A new 64.5 metres (212 ft) copper-roofed steeple, designed by Bindenshu, was then built. A sphere and rooster were set atop the steeple 10 May 1690. This tower was the tallest wooden construction in Europe at the time. The western facade of the church was also altered in the later 17th century. The brick construction was covered with reddish limestone from Salaspils and Koknese, and the facade was decorated with volutes, pilasters, cornices, vases and borders made of Gotland stone. In 1692 the Riga City Council approved a design by Bindenshu and the mason Andreas Peterman for three identical portals. The merchant Klaus Mistett financed the portals, which were built by H. Henneken, Johann Daniel Schauss, Johann Gerwin and several other sculptors. The portals were decorated with Baroque style limestone sculptures. In 1694 L. Martini installed a new tower clock with a glockenspiel from Amsterdam.

When M on the Bund opened in January 1999, the idea was to create a dining experience as exciting, as sophisticated, as delectable as Shanghai itself. Located at the pinnacle of the historic Nissin Shipping Building, built in 1921, M overlooks Shanghais most famous sight: the Bund. Here, diners sample a creative menu in a warm, sophisticated space, where references to Shanghais glamorous past are updated and given a contemporary spin. The roof terrace and stylish Crystal Room are also favourite spots to savour Ms simply good food, whose flavours range from the comforting to the novel, from Europe to the Middle East, but remain grounded in classical European techniques.

Modern European cuisine
M on the Bund serves a delicious menu of modern European food: a collection of classics, nostalgic favourites and dishes from the Middle East and North Africa, too. Chef Hamish Pollitt believes that it is the combination of great ingredients and great teamwork that produces great food crucial when youre cooking for hundreds of people a day!

Chinas flavourful local bounty
Naturally, good cuisine begins with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Shanghai has its share of Chinas flavourful local bounty, which includes surprising produce like foie gras, black truffles, all manner of birds, fabulous herbs and unusual fruits. We import what we need to make authentic western cuisine, and make our own breads, ice creams and desserts and are continually inspired by the flavours of the vegetables and fruits in our neighbourhood markets.

Jungfraujochs Sphinx Observatory The top of Europe

Jungfraujoch is a col or saddle between the Mnch and the Jungfrau in the Bernese Alps on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, inside the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area.

Strictly, the Jungfraujoch is the lowest point on the mountain ridge between Mnch and Jungfrau, at 3,471 meters (11,388 ft). It is just above this location that the mountain station of Jungfraubahn is located, Jungfraujoch railway station, which at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 ft) is the highest railway station in Europe. The Jungfraujoch is often called the “Top of Europe” in tourist literature.

Jungfraujoch view from the Sphinx Observatory

Not far east of the col rises a peak called the Sphinx, which tops out at an elevation of 3,571 meters (11,716 ft). It begins from the Jungfraujoch on the Valais side and at the Great Aletsch Glacier. There is an elevator to the summit of the Sphinx, where a small viewing platform and a scientific observatory, the Sphinx Observatory, are located.

The Jungfraujoch is also home to one of the Global Atmosphere Watch’s atmospheric research stations. The Jungfraujoch can only be reached through a 7.3 km long cog railway tunnel, served by the Jungfraubahn, the highest in a series of cooperating railway companies that provide access to the Jungfraujoch from Interlaken.

Constructed between 1906 and 1909 by the Catalan architect Lluis Domnech i Montaner, this Modernista building was restored between 1983 and 1989 by the architect and designer scar Tusquets, and in 1997 it was designated a World Heritage Site.

The concert hall of the Palau, which seats about 2,200 people, is the only auditorium in Europe that is illuminated during daylight hours entirely by natural light. The walls on two sides consist primarily of stained-glass panes set in magnificent arches, and overhead is an enormous skylight of stained glass designed by Antoni Rigalt whose centerpiece is an inverted dome in shades of gold surrounded by blue that suggests the sun and the sky.

The architectural decoration in the concert hall is a masterpiece of creativity and imagination, yet everything has been carefully considered for its utility in the presentation of music.
